Here is another example of the repurposed furniture I'm doing for our Den. This larger piece was part of dining set. So I decided to redo it in the same style as the end-tables I finished for the den. I have plans for it do hold the TV boxes and dvd's, this will be our version of an entertainment center.

After prepping the piece...sanding, filling in gauges, priming and painting....the aging process will be the last step before sealing it.

Yeah....I think I'm going a bit crazy with the scrools designs, but they can be addictive and fun to do!

2011 A few projects completed

This is a fun project I completed for a client who wanted to update her typical Builder grade stove hood....she felt it needed something, so why not Faux stone?
After measuring, for the grout and size of stone, the mixture was troweld on, dried 24 hours before I hand painted it.
So now she has a new hood to match her little stone tile trim....a perfect solution with the all the contractors or masons.
It was so much fun....I brought the idea home and adapted to some ideas my husband was playing with....I'll post those pictures soon.

I hope all who find themselves here enjoyed a wonderful Christmas Day with family and friends.
After all the chaos of finding gifts and wrapping them until fingers were numb from masking tape or paper cuts.....we're almost headed to the finish line people!
Happy to report....I think my fingers will recover LOL.
But before I forget completly, I wanted to share a few pictures of our Holiday decorations.....it will take a while to find the right pieces or create them for this home, it's size is just to much to try to do in my first year in this home.

Anyway, its fun to check other creative Bloggers and try to re-create some delightful decor for next year.

Making New & Fun Again

Looking around my home, I found some interesting areas that needed some help.....or added fun with a redo or new color.

So why not work with some furniture for now.

Never one to be scared of trying something new with paint, I decided to take this old beat-up table and begin the process of bringing in new color tones to our den.

My husband needed a bigger end table to hold all his controls and glass of tea....so why not start here.

It wouldn't hurt?

Table 1

Step 1.

Clean, sand and remove old veneer that was peeling....redo surface with filler and prime.

....Took longer than I expected to peel the veneer!!!!

Painted a combination of colors along with Bronze metallic.

The top needed something else????? O.k. what about some swirls?

Yeah!!! Free-handed some scrools designs for that extra punch I felt it needed.....this is all the painting before I aged the final piece and top coated it.

I'll show the completed piece along with 2 others when I post the other pictures in a few days.

Redoing our Fireplace

Well, after sitting and staring at our Den fireplace for almost 9 months since I moved into our home....it finally dawned on me to get some of my artistic tools out and begin the process of creating something fun and yes... a bit unusual finishes for our own home.

Looking around the room, my husband is surrounded with warm tones, leathers and skins that add more browns with the hard wood floors that are found in the home.

So I took note of that and decided to play it up and have fun with the finishes I have done for other clients.

My husband has been wonderful by encouraging me to play with our home and make it ours with our personality....and wants me to paint to my hearts desire. So slowly I will be creating finishes as the room dictates....I'll be posting as the changes continue.

Fall Mantels

Well with the change in the air and colors starting to swirl in the Fall hues, it was time for me to try an bring a bit of Harvest decor inside my own home.

This will be my first time decorating my new abode in this historic home, a bit of getting used to but willing to try as I gather ideas from other Bloggers.

The 1st picture is the formal living while the 2nd White mantel is in the Den.

Being older mantels, the depth is not large enough for bigger foliage like I'm used to, so smaller and longer floral picks is what I went with.

I used an a square gray and red bird McCoy vase as my center piece for the white mantel since it fit just right on the depth of the mantel and added the picks on each side.

Special Lighting

After looking around this store and others, I have found that many items I have come across at yard sales or tag sales could be re-used in similar ways. I have come across tables of old broken sea shell pot/flower hangers that now I can see being reused to make a similar chandelier as posted above.

Using old baskets made of jute or wicker and turning them into some interesting shades.

I have always found taking a stroll into some of these stores to be just the right kick to get me going again when I have lost my creative mo-jo.

Now its just remebering to pick these items up when I see them and getting them done....better get my glue gun ready!

Well, I thought with the New TV Decorating season upon us and children back in school, I should get back to the Blog world and share a few interesting pictures of trends I saw this past weekend.

So I just returned from Port Aransas and Wow was I pleasantly surprised with a little shop on the island....Susan Castor.

It was a fantastic find and great atmosphere of inspiration on this small coastal town. Though the store was Coastal in style, many items and textiles could easily be used in any room or decor style.

I met one of the designers, Lisa Mayo, who made the visit even more friendly when she gladly let me take some pictures to share with readers.

So with so many I took, they will be posted in different posts, so please stay tuned and tour the store.

First note the eclectic and energitic use of different items for lighting....

Bright colors, basket weaves, Linen and Burlap lampshades and best of all the soft and translucents of shell, mother of pearl and drift wood.

Spring 2011 at Warrenton/Round Top Texas has come and gone but the ideas and creativity I saw first hand is still going thru my brain. It was amazing to see how much this once little show in the back hills of East Texas farm country has grown to miles and miles of shopping.

I can remember when I started visiting for a "Day" trip back in the 80's as a college student needing to find something cheap, now I need to make plans for "days" of shopping and that doesn't mean I will hit every spot....I admit, it's just getting to crazy even for this antique lover.

Still, I had to attempt it and get some ideas for my new home....one obvious trend that is still going strong is Textures...whether in bed linens or decorative pillows, the use of linen, cotton aged with tea and added with vintage lace is still just as popular.

The use of burlap and mother pearl buttons add to the flair of that special piece. I do wish I had taken more pictures, but I got carried away oogling and forgot to take more pictures.....just another reason to make plans for the Fall.

Oh, maybe you can see the pictures, but some used old photos and broken jewelry as added trinkets to pillows....so clear out those junk drawers or old family photos and add them to your pillows.

First Things First! I Need Closets!

O.k. I have to admit, moving into my new home has taken me longer than I expected but maybe it would be easier if I did not have to worry about closet space.

Yes, this girl needs closet space.

With beautiful older homes comes the reality that our great-grandmothers were happy with armoires and few belongs, but modern day women love their shoes, purses and so much more that we need our "CLOSETS!!!!"

It takes me longer to get ready... walking room to room, excavating a decent outfit to wear when everything is spread out into different rooms and little closets.

So my darling has done wonders....or at least made dressing easier for me.

Using plumbers pipe, he measured and installed 2 large rods against the back of an exsisiting armoire which we placed in the center of the room (my new Master Closet) He uses the enclosed space for his clothes and I, the open rods for easy viewing.

Of course I had to go out and buy those special hangers at Bed & Bath, I adore them.

We still have large antique dressers for both of us. With the original closets used for shoes and purses.

Still need to tweek the room, but at least most of my belongings are at an easy reach...but it's a start!

I just can't believe how bad I have been about keeping up with friends, both here on the Blog world and those in person.

I feel so bad about the whole lack of communication but for those who might have wandered off due to my lack of postings you might give me a pass when you learn a bit more.

I've been working as usual, trying out new faux finish techniques, facing my fear of heights by using scaffolding and preparing for my upcoming wedding.

Yes, I'm getting married....long over due, family and friends thought it would never happen, just know I'm closer to hitting 50 than 40, so here I am, making plans and arranging for the ceremony next month.

So I have been looking around sites, biting my lip as I see young and beautiful women preparing to enter this journey as this mid-road of life bride plans for hers.

Still, it's been fun and the creative juices are on overload.

I'm hoping to help others out by sharing some ideas for wedding decor... here on the Blog and show how I have made those I have found on sites and blogs and turned them into "Our" unique twist for our ceremony without breaking the bank.

So stay tuned for that.

I'm also in the midst of moving into my new "Older" home....his home is in a historical district of town. It will be both of us and the family dog he rescued and the ghost that comes with the home.

Yes, her name is Lucille and so far she has been pretty good, just one little scare.

Alot of projects around this grand Victorian Home but time and excitement will help us get through the redecorating and remodeling.

Nevertheless, shopping is still a fun part of posting here, so here are some pictures of some cute little spots I have around my new digs, lots of inspiration, maybe to much but I always try to take a quick picture for friends.

It seems that most places I have stopped by for a visit have started to play and highlight some interesting and different Light Fixtures. Or it might just be me....paying little more attention to these delicate beauties.
Now that I'm getting ready to do some redecorating and remodeling, these great pieces I've noticed, are made from found objects, a mix of old and new, Retro and Industrial....even branches.
It has become more of a quest to find Just the Right piece that will fit my personality....and the home I'll be moving into. ..any suggestions for Victorian 1907 home with the attitude of a modern eclectic 2011 updated lady. Nothing stuffy but actually fun.

Weekend Finds

Glad I went out this weekend despite my inner reservations that the finds wouldn't be that promising with the Holidays apporaching...so I was happy I went out after all. I found some really nice goodies! Hope my Blog friends were successful as well....so don't give up, you just never know what you'll find.

Wasn't sure if I should head out this past weekend to hunt for some goodies....but pleasantly, the Garage Sales were pretty good and my finds turned out to be very special. Living in a military city can also bring forth some interesting treasures from those who have returned to the States from abroad.
Here a just a few of this fun weekend hunt...some Fenton glass, a pair of Kimberly hand painted framed cat tiles and of course my current decorating trend, some vintage Bird prints.

Free Graphics

I know many Blog surfers like to find "Free" goodies whenever possible. Whether it be Tips, Contests or Graphics they can use for their personal crafting or business use.
One of my recent Garage Sale haunts gave me the opportunity to share some pictures of vintage Christmas wrapping paper....a real colorful example of what our Grandparents might have used. These came from a box Labeled Good Housekeeping....from the late 40's or 50's, but they were so colorful I couldn't resist them and brought them home.
So here you have a couple of pictures of these papers to use with your crafting...maybe use for scrap booking, making tags, mat boards for pictures, cards, or any other creative ideas you might find useful. Just click on the picture and create.

Good Guys Car Show

I've always been attracted to Design, whether Vintage, Modern or New/Reproduction, Wood or Metal, as long as it reflected taste and elements of unique styling, I tended to drift in its direction for my personal use or projects for my clients.
So when I attended a Vintage car show in Ft. Worth, "Good Guys' with my fiance, I thought I would just tag along and wait as he dissected and ogled these beauties.

I must say, the show turned out to be a huge eye opener....shiny, colorful and stylish, these Automobiles rightfully command attention.

The creativity on some were just as artistic as would be some Interior Designs....upholstered or Fauxed, murals or altered to be Muscle cars or Rat Rods...the show was a blast and a real learning experience.

New but Old Trends

Fun and Eclectic Lighting seemed to be a huge Trend this year in Warrenton.
Though I showed up mid week, the booths still had enough examples of their wears to show the exciting styles of Re-Used or Found pieces to create such interesting beauties. Large or small, the metal use is a great backdrop to the metal furniture pieces also being used for decorating.
Industrial or garage mechanical storage pieces reused for tables, counters and dressers were found throughout the show.
I also had a great time visiting with Theresa from http://GardenAntqsVintage.blogspot.com....as usual, a fresh breath of air and energy. Can't wait to see her other location in McKinney, Texas.

Oh La La

Happy to share a few pictures of a quaint little shop stuck in the back portion of a long gravel road North of San Antonio in older Ranch style home.
Oh La La, is a nice antique store carrying a wide variety of pieces, from American, Country and carved French pieces which currently I'm seeking. Garden statues and doors, stained glass windows and china, just take your time and enjoy the shopping.
If you decide to take a look, please note, they are closed on Mondays, but take Hwy 1604 North on Bandera Road, heading to Bandera Texas. It's not to far from the outskirts of S.A. but it's worth the drive to see what's new.
Now, I'm getting ready for Warrenton next week...my appetite is wet just hope the Antique show fairs better with the rain we have had.

Back Roads

Movies Anyone? Seems Like the "Rialto" was a popular spot in these little towns.

This past weekend brought an opportunity to take a longer but picturesque drive from San Antonio to Port Arnsas.
Taking the time to explore Hwy 77 , driving through some quaint and by-gone towns.
Sadly I made the effort to take some pictures to remember this trip....this might be the last time I would have the opportunity to document such historical spots quickly disappearing all around America.

Some Redo's

Testing hardware....and step prior to sanding. More furniture to be posted later.

A satin coat of "Red" sanded to expose aged effect.....replace old hardware with new
brushed nickel half moon shaped drawer pulls.
Sealed with clear coat in satin finish.

After sanding the piece a coat of Slate Black over XIM primer

Lot's of new things have been happening since my last post...but one project I think some of you would like to see are the fun Redo's of furniture I just completed.
Of course the all to familiar Baby changing table...great piece but obviously out of place in a guest room. So goes on the thinking cap and preparing the surface for the new look....without the changing top....that would be reused as a wall bulletin board.

White Wednesday

I found these little "Finton" gems by accident, as I found a worn out cardboard box tucked under the table...I took my time unwrapping the antique newspaper to find these White flower vases waiting to be unearthed....a bit dirty, nope, really crusted over with age...so when the seller let me take them both for $1.50...my mind said; SOLD!
The second picture of the square candlesticks were unearthed ....and I saw the potential and their beauty under layers of melted wax. I guess some people have little vision to see what lies underneath such history...but that's fine, I was able to bring them home for a couple of $'s
My archeology find was a success...now it was the second step.... I would need to be patient with...soaking and cleaning to reaveal their beauty. Whala! Success!
The Antique Celluloid dominoes...were also a last minute find...not sure what I will do with them..but they were one of those items I couldn't walk away from.
Hope the sales continue to bear such fruit...for all us of around the antiquing community....Good Hunting to all!

I came across these little figurines made of plastic at a local garage/tag sale...what interested me in making the small purchase...of 50cents each...was the amount of detail of these cute little clowns, labeled "Made in Italy" At that price I couldn't leave this Circus behind.

Hi there to all those who find that just working on something a bit normal in size is sufficient enough to stay creative or keep ones sanity...LOL
Not me....So, I found these little Turquoise earrings a while back on one of my many garage sale excursions...stashed them away because one was missing a little piece of Turquoise... so so tiny..I should not have bothered....but there I was....taking out my art supplies and figured what do I have to loose...Time? Eyesight? Sanity?....it was a rainy day and might have fun.

Using several colors I already had of Fimo...I created my own Turquoise... Baked, not even a minute, because they turn black due to size, glued & dabbed a bit of gloss sealer for the polished shine.

So I thought I would share the results....no one can really tell...just you and those who might find this post...but if you do find some broken jewelry, give this a try, it might work for you too.

Maybe it's just me, but I noticed that I have no real sense of time anymore....but I think I can snap out of it soon.
I guess its starts right before Halloween, going to my favorite stores and finding displays months before Christmas sharing space with Pumpkins, Turkeys and Angels.
Now we are about to celebrate one of my personal favorites...Valentines Day, just a few days away....can you believe this? Well, I thought I should play around and pull out some favorites, to get in that "Loving Feeling" LOL

....Roses, whether freshly cut and placed in a beautiful vase or sipping tea from a delicate painted saucer...Roses always give me a smile. So I share a Rose or two with you my friends as this special day approaches.
Whether you can wear a vintage sterling bracelet, fashionably use a little purse....take this opportunity to add a bit of love to your day....

The Best of Friends....

As some of you might know....I was edging ever so closely to the sad reality that my Dear friend, Mr. Dryfus, my companion, artistic muse and confidant was nearing his end as each day passed.
He reached a milestone this past June when he turned 20 years....yes 20!
I and many who knew him were amazed how this guy, born under a car, in a unfavorable little neighborhood, the runt of his litter, would end up doing so much...but most importantly touched so many lives when I decided to bring him home.
So each day and even these few extra months, were indeed a reminder how blessed I was to have him....
his body was giving out...his arthritis getting worse, (where I had to help him up or carry him outside as he got his footing) his hearing was long gone, eye site getting worse...but his Heart was ever strong ( he was my little Timex)....I was hoping that he would pass in his sleep but that would not be.
So the decision was mine ...the hardest one I have had to make to date and hope never to have to do it again.
The house is way to quiet now...but I eagerly smile when I see a little fur ball going by....sort of an Angelic reminder.... he will never be forgotten....but the tears soon follow. I know it will take time for my heart to heal....so those of you with pets....your dearest of friends....enjoy and love them a bit more, just as token for all of those who have lost their own...we wish you joy and laughter with your furry ones....
Mr. Dryfuss....you will never be forgotten.....sleep well and hope the angels have all your favorite treats and a soft bed as you watch over the rest of us.

Tuesday Redo...

This is the "BEFORE" picture of the Resin "Plastic-like" fountain I was asked to Redo for a client. Though the piece was nice...it did not have the appeal she was looking for....too shiny and not the right the color for her outdoor space.
As you are aware if you have tried to paint a surface like this, you must use a special plastic primer, choose your colors, and have fun. Let the relief of the fountain work for you....darken the areas and highlight by dry brushing so it reveals the details. Avoid using White and Black, play with your colors and you will be surprised with the final and realistic look.
Spray a Matte sealer finish if it is to be used outside and exposed to the elements.

Here is a better view of the painted details for a more realistic finish of an aged fountain....a trick to remember is the natural "wear" or watermarks found in real fountains. I added several colors of an Orange-Brown to create rust, and green drips where algae would form from the mouth and rim of the fountain.....I also added some River Rock paint...from the Ralph Lauren line to the surface to create more of the cement feel and continued painting.
Finished with a clear protective Matte sealer.
Here is the "Final" finish....ready to entertain guest, both people and little singing birds ready for a quiet retreat.

Artsy Thursday

Wa-La! Done.....Perfect for his nursery

Final finishes....small satin ribbon glued around
the inside portion of the frame to add interest.
Some velcro was added inside the center pocket to secure larger objects when stored.

Close-up of ironed glued strip to create clean borders & trim for the large pocket for do-dads. Frog fabric was cut & ironed on each side of pocket with red trim ironed & glued in place for nice piping effect. Lower pocket was then stapled on each side of canvas frame to secure along frame. Fabric buttons were also reused & painted to match fabric and glued in place.

I have to admit, when it comes to working with fabric, I leave it to the professionals...but with this project, I turned to my ever handy glue gun, iron, no sew strips and staple gun. So if I can do it....I'm sure the rest of you can do it without any problems.
Just be patient & careful with that "Hot" glue gun.

After looking around several favorite Blogging sites, I thought I should join in the fun & share a recent "artsy" project with some Before & After pictures. What was fun about this, was the idea of using an inexpensive framed canvas....knew when I picked it up in a Tag sale, it would be repurposed in some way.
So here it is....using some of my clients fabric left-overs, I primed & painted the frame to match her sons bedroom decor. Left the Sante Fe canvas and covered with 3 layers of quilt batting for the Bulletin board before stretching & stapling Green Check fabric.

I thought I would share a few pictures of some little dainty details I noticed when going thru some linens....its amazing how those little details of stitching and embroidery were so common back then.

I enjoy them so much, looking and admiring but I must admit, the beauty of those little pristine guest towels are just to pretty to use.
I just might need to put a sign up..."Look but please don't Use"....afraid little hands will leave their little marks and I'll be unable to launder to their current beauty.
...Just don't have the guts to risk it!

Here are a few more ....with a Box style suede purse and a gray leather chain style purse....just wish they were a bit larger for all that "extra" stuff I tend to carry....but they will have to do...and I'll have to learn not to carry so much.
Shopping hint:...most of these little gems were found at some local thrift stores...those which raise funds for the Hospital volunteers...perfect, since most of the items come from the same gray haired ladies that work the store.
Go find one in your town, you just might find your own little fashion statement.

Getting Ready for Fall

Well with the arrival Fall....I felt I had the opportunity and that it was time to re-do my closet and prepare for the season.
Not that I'm a fashion guru...far from it. Yet after flipping through some of the popular fashion magazines, I realize that Mom's philosophy that everything "old is new again" is obvious this season.
Just look at those High end designers, you know, the one with the "little polo rider on the Horse" or that famous French house?
I'm glad that I always had an interest in those little Alligator or Crocodile purses popular in the 40's and 50's....there's no need to worry that PETA will come after me (there vintage!)....and that I'm doing my own version of living "Green" and recycling....while saving a huge fortune.
One of my favorites...is the small clutch pictured on the bottom....it has a little sling where you place your hand to hold on....what a great idea and easy to use.
Hope you enjoy some of those that I pulled out for this fall.

After perusing so many fashion magazines and watching some of my favorite guilty pleasures return to the T.V. line up this past week.....Project Runway and Rachel Zoe.
I thought I should try my hand at creating some of my own statements....forget the sewing machine, fabrics and hemming. I can't even sew on a button....
But why not try to create some interesting accessories to update my wardrobe for the Fall season....I took out a box of beads and stones that I have collected for a while and played with the colors and sizes.
Not that I will give up my real job...but sitting down and playing with the beads and stringing up some new necklaces was really fun.

Getting Back On

Well, it's been a while since I've Blogged....and I've sure missed out on a lot.
I don't know where or who exactly stated: "That things happen for a reason and when they do...they sure do"
That being said...when the Gizmo goblins decided to have fun with me a couple of weeks ago...they sure planned a whopper of a headache.
Despite the old P.C. crashing and having to buy a new one....the printer decided to join in the fun and commit its own demise as well and therefore another purchase....the digital camera decided to act up too....what else can go wrong?

So far this hasn't been as bad as when my cell camera got wet...and all the pictures died with it.

But before I decide to give up entirely...I found a way to download a couple of pictures and share with you all....just a couple of ideas and interesting antiques which are nice to look at from the comforts of home.

The Hunt begins!!!

I must start by apologizing for not keeping up with my postings...but the unforeseen started earlier this month....my trusted and old friend (PC) finally decided to relinquish and die.
With that the nightmares began....choosing another, how could I find the same relationship with another...and least of all, a new version that gave me the little option of having to go "VISTA!!!" yikes!
My trusted XP spoiled me for any other, but here I am, still biting my lips as I slowly start using this new system. Of course those of you who have already become familiar with VISTA, you're aware that most of your programs are not compatible with this new version...so I'm slowly...very slowly, figuring out what I really need and what I will have to do without.
But here I am, trying to post again...and hoping this won't be as frightening and aggravating as it has been.
So here I go....
Many of you know that the "shopping season" has begun...and I mean the "real" season for us die-hard garage or tag sale addicts. The season has been off to a good start, up a little earlier, fighting larger crowds and keeping in my mind to be a bit more selective.
Here a few new "old" items I have found...most I notice are busts or little figurines, dainty but nice for displays.
Not really sure why I bought the Nurse...but there was something about her and fun, that I had to bring her home...chips and all.

Sea Shells and Decor

With Spring Break on every ones mind...the smell of the ocean breeze and walking thru sandy shorelines hunting for that perfect sea shell. Packing them up and bringing them home as a friendly reminder of the tranquility of a fun weekend excursion, brought me home to ponder on the delicacies of the artisans who created some of my favorites finds.

I've come across a few pieces of Victorian Shell art...a bouquet of sea shell flowers and the most unique of vanity items...tiny hand blown perfume viles decorated with little shell flowers...how romantic these souls were who created such art for their loved ones.

Being Girlie

Today I decided to play with some of my Favorite Girlie collectibles....my vintage collection of compacts. I started collecting them as a curiosity of what I would see in old movies...women dining and dancing, dressed up to the nines with little purses and dainty make-up compacts ready to used as the dab some powder on their nose. It seemed so romantic and classic, that when I came across one at Estate sales , Tag sales or Antique fairs, I hoped I would be able to come home with one....and another and another!
So here are a few I wanted to share with you...jeweled ones, Sterling, Repousse are so compact, that everything from your powder, lipstick, coins and few dollars would fit into your palm.

One of my favorites where I place some aspirin for those unfortunate headaches...is a dainty Victorian compact with 2 little fairies....if the aspirin doesn't work...maybe these fairies will do their magic.

Resolutions....

Well, like any new year comes another round of "New" resolutions for me...but I'm happy to say, that I was lucky enough to start this one last Spring.
Not that I started another diet or stopped drinking my favorite drink...Diet Dr. Pepper but actually got off my "...." and exercised...
I started walking early every morning around the neighborhood and I've actually started to like it! I don't see myself signing up for any marathon or race...but at least I found that this small activity ( about 3-4 miles daily) has helped me creatively too.
Clears my mind and gets those artistic juices going. So for all those who have that on their Resolutions list...keep going, you might be surprised you might like the change and enjoying yourself as well. So get yourself some great new music for your MP3 players, lace up and go for it! For inspiration...a favorite antique illustration above...that reminds me that it could be possible to fit into something nice without the girdle....one day.

Well to all those who have finished their Champagne...ate their 12 Grapes ( a Latin Tradition I grew up with...& tasty to boot! ) and made their perfect wishes for the New Year...I send you all the good vibes that 2009 has to offer.
May it bring you all the prosperity, good health, happiness, creativity, great antiques finds and plenty of smiles all year long.
It's been kind of scary how quickly the last couple of weeks have gone by...but I think I'm starting to get the hand of writing "09" on the bill statements...not that I want to, but reality of the season... is not ignoring that those Bills, will eventually find their way to my mailbox...YUK!
Even so, 2008 has been a wonderful learning experience, made new friends on the Blog, and 09 should even be brighter... now that I'm getting used to fact the world is not as large as I thought it was ...especially when connected to the world wide web.

Have you noticed?

Have you noticed that once you start shopping at your Tag sales or Garage sales...that you pick what you like at one location one weekend and the next weekend you find something similar...before you know it, you started a collection without actually planning to do so.

Below are a few items I found recently at different sales and weekends...these are Italian decorative items: gilded, filigree with a plaster-like coating. Just the elegant look got my attention at first...and when I unpacked the finds and put them together, I realized that I had started another collection. Sometimes I'll go weeks without finding anything interesting and then whalla...you strike GOLD!!!

Has this happen to you?

With the recent change in weather and local neighborhood sales becoming more prevalent...I started taking note of those which were close enough to home to venture out early and begin my own "Hunting Season"...forget the guns...all I need are some good tennis shoes, loose change and plenty of patience. Around my area....it's nice to have the option of just parking in a large community and stroll the open garages to find some hidden treasure...mind you, patience is needed to deal with the professional family flee market dealers that also make it a point to shop...but if your collecting Gods are with you, you might just find something special.

This might be a little pet peeve of mine...but a little decorum would be nice...close the car doors, park your car along the curb of the road and not ideal ling in the middle of street....and please, keep the children safe and avoid them jumping out of the bed of pick-up truck onto oncoming traffic!

This collection of prints "above" were found at different sales one Saturday morning...with the vintage reproduction print of the Holy Mother with her child. It was a fun adventure hitting the sales not knowing what I would find...and to my surprise I finally found my "Month" of this botanical print...and for $ 8.00. I can't get it framed for that...so pack it up, we have winner!

Fall

These large Roosters came from Kerrville, Texas... from one of our weekend trips a couple of years ago...they too get into the Festive spirit...adorned with additional roosters, chicks and twinkle lights...just a bit more fun while we have our morning cereal. Thanks for letting me share my pictures...and hope I can be a bit more ready when Christmas comes along.
So enjoy your Fall decorating...and know that there are some of us who just finished setting up this weekend....finally!

The Mantel was found and purchased over 30 years ago...never really knew if it would be used...until we decided to build our Hill Country house 8 years ago. Now it proudly welcomes guest to our home. So now its decorated as well...with Birds..made from ceramic, metal or painted on plates...and as you can see those who saw one of my earlier posts, Mr Dryfuss ( our family dog ) sits proudly in his Matador outfit portrait....can you tell he is the focal point of our family.

The large Armoire that holds the entertainment area...once had large mirrors on the doors. Didn't much care for the look for the Living area...so I removed them and replaced with fabric & padding and covered MDF panels.

This piece is also a favorite area for Holiday decorating...so I finally pulled out my Fall colors and adorned the top with Antique Fishing Baskets...Deer antlers, wooden Bird houses and of course the foliage & pumpkins. A favorite part I like to include is a light timer with little rice lights that come on just as it starts to get dark...just a little twinkle makes us feel happy.

Well I hope most of you are doing better than me...I can't believe how quickly the year has gone by and we are now closing into the heavy season of Fall decorating and Holiday decor.

I for one...have been very slow to accept the reality before me...but with my neighbors and homes decorated with such beautiful and colorful Fall colors...I finally woke up and decided to join in the fun.

Studio Time

I finally made enough time to schedule a Decorative Painting class before the Fall rush starts...most people like to make changes in their home for holidays...so it was a perfect time to have some fun. I decided go to my favorite supplier and fellow artist who offers a wide variety of courses, not just for the Beginner but for those who would like to see what is new in products or just want to have some fun and make lots of hands-on samples for their portfolio.
Leslie Vigini (www. ViginiStudios.com) is a wonderful instructor, patient and eager to share plenty of her knowledge beyond the course you're taking.
I truly enjoyed my class and will sign up for another in the future.
Here is just a small sample of Painted finishes....I'll show the "fancy" stuff later on.

This look and technique is one of my favorites...leathers are always fun but this Crocodile look can make any room look like it came from the pages of A. Digest. Just like Ostrich skin this technique takes some practice but once you master it...you will enjoy doing it often. PETA will never take aim at you....you'll be earth friendly.

This is another decorative finish that can be used on furniture and walls. Using large Stencils, the design can dictate what your room or style wants to project. This was completed in metallic golds...and can resemble Damask with the right stencil or pattern.

One of my "Fun" looks is this rich and elegant finish. This Tortoise look was completed on a door panel, but can be applied to any area or decorative item.

Using Golds and an Activator...the results turned out wonderful...now I just have to figure out what I want to transform?

If you look closely to the edge, the area shows the Activator in better detail.

This is a Finish to resemble the High Gloss or Lacquered Looks ...this finish is referred to as Negoro Nuri. Has many layers and is sealed with a high gloss using a HVLP.

This Crackle finish is a two step process with the Metallic Copper Base with Paint Activator and Stain.

Here is a nice Crackle finish done in a Stain effect....paints & technique to resemble any types of woods with a clear crackle and activator applied with HVLP. Perfect look for kitchen cabinets.

Another Shopping Spot

It has been a while since I had chance to post...but work has been a bit crazy, with family stopping by in between. Still, I make it a point to shop when I can and I thought I would share another spot I frequent.
Here is another favorite...Go-To store... when I'm in need of something special for a project or clients home....it's called The Arrangement and it's located in Castle Hills in San Antonio Texas. The Owners are a Mother/Daughter team...who love to scout for antiques and find creative Floral Designers to create the most beautiful arrangements. I'd advise you to take your time when visiting...there is so much to look at, that it will take you several trips around the store to make sure you didn't miss a thing.

These Owners enjoy finding many Garden Decor items...such as wrought iron, from window pieces, to large cement figurines used for art and not just water features. This store can be a sensory overload...but worth your time to visit and check out how they made the pieces come together.

The Arrangement...has a wonderful way to display the old with the new...the look is so eclectic, it makes every piece look fresh...from old lace, to reupholstered chairs. I hope to go back and take some sharper pictures for your enjoyment...it was a last minute trip...so my phone was handy for this visit.

Changing Artwork

Here is close-up of the Suede finish as well as the repainted Antiqued Glazed frames with a bit of Gold, I chose to do for the smaller prints....they all came together. With GREEN being the prominent color.

This collection of Hand colored prints were found in stages over a long period of time.

Soon, I realized the signed prints were a series of Birds...that now I was going to look for whether framed or not.

These frames didn't match...the matting was in good condition but needed to be refreshed, so here I go with my paint brush again.

I chose some green Suede paint ( I used the Ralph Lauren line) and repainted the matting in the same method I would do walls. The rich look of the finish gave the framed prints a rich and updated look that unified the whole collection. Much cheaper as well. No need to get them reframed, especially when I know I will change my decor soon enough.

Many were found at local favorites, or weekend finds at Garage Sales or Flea Markets.

If they have frames with glass, I know I had a good day....even if they are a bit mistreated, a quick touch-up will always make them look just as good as new. Not every piece of framed art has to be a painting to make them special....as long as you like them....it's your gallery of FINE ART.

Trying something new

A couple of months ago I came across a cute shop that Specializes in Stamping........Stampantonio.
Art stamps galore, with all the extras to do, Mixed Media Altered Art to Re-purposed jewelry.
The store has a great work space which is open to the public on certain days for only $5.00, with the use of all the materials at your disposal.
It was to good to pass up the opportunity to try this form of art...and at least say I tried it once.

The paint materials were just house paints... found at Lowe's & H.D.
Used the Metallic paint in Gold, Bronze & Aged Gold. They have a glaze medium already in the paint, so the application is transparent.
Brushes, sponge and artist types for added detail.
Easy clean-up but good wear factor for the leather.

This is the purse that inspired me to try this "Stamping" art form. A favorite "Coach" that had a major accident...can you see I forgot to put the top back on my pen.

Well, I wasn't going to give it up without a fair fight.

Walking thru stores, it was evident that Metallic finishes were pretty popular on the purses...so why not pull out my paints and give it some Art CPR.

It took a couple of applications to finally hide the spots...but it was ready for some rubber stamping surgery.

After the stamping, I used my smaller brushes to highlight part of the details...for a first time, the purse survived the procedure.

This Apple Green leather purse was to fun not to use anymore, and not give it a second chance by saving it with a quick Metallic paint wash....the green leather actually made the purse more reflective with the combination of the Bronze color I used. I painted the purse on both sides, the front side which was damaged with stains ( you know the look, the dirt stain you get for resting your purse on the floor, yuk ) and that's where I stamped.

I picked the script rubber stamp, fluer de li, postage stamps and Di Vinci stamps too. The overall look , came out different with this color of purse....but I still like the effort.

These little cards turned out to be more fun than I expected.

The studio, had so many stamps for antiquing, that I tried to add a bit more detail with the colors and splatter effects stamps.

They had so much to choose from, that I took longer to make up mind than actually sitting down and getting to work.

Anyway, they were completed and are ready to be added as my jewelry tags for my future ETSY listings. I might opt to use them as backings, so the customer can have fun on their own... by reusing or framing. Overall, I think I might go back to the Studio sooner than expected.

Shops

Currently I found the "Cottage" is carrying a large selection of painted & gilded pieces...from furniture... to Brass lighting and accents.

Looking around the store you will find a good selection of Transfer ware with framed Lytho prints adorning the walls, along with an array of Religious art.

There are times I like to just take some time and visit some of my favorite stores around the city, and one of them is "Cottage" located on Sunset Road toward the center of San Antonio.

The store itself might be small in size but it's worth the visit, when it often has a good inventory of unique pieces and European antiques from their travels to make your stop worth your while.

You do have to be somewhat careful as you peruse the store...most items have to sit on top of each other or be squeezed into some tight places, to get as much into the store for your shopping.

Still, its worth the effort to look around every nook and cranny...you might find that lost treasure you've been looking for. I Did.

Shades of Inspiration

After reading many Blogs, I found an interesting and occurring creative objective that many of you have contributed too.....that of posting to "Shades of Inspiration" by Sadie Olive.

I looked at many previous postings and have found the project to be very insightful to ways "We".... Artist, Decorators, Writers, Cooks, Professional or Novice, should look at our surroundings.

So I thought, I should give it try....there is always a first for everything and since Blogging has turned out to be so much more, than I thought it could be, this should be just as fun. So here I go: This week Shades of Inspirations....Green and Pink.

Here is a collection of some my USA ( McCoy) pottery, with a favorite Pink Cocker Spaniel flower pot, to the left of the picture. I included a Green glass square box too, not sure who made it, but it went with the color scheme.

As you can see, the Green & Pink colors for this week, did get me to pull out some fun Quartz jewelry....Rose quartz, Strawberry and Jade necklaces. I reached for some old favorites as well, some sterling antique bracelets and carved green earrings. The Green necklace is a sterling filigree, probably the 20's.

The pictures include a pair of Vintage Ralph Lauren Scarfs, that include the strong color combinations...I tend to keep a few scarfs and fabric samples in my workroom for future projects. Letting the fashion designers do some of the work in creating perfect colors combos can help elevate many design problems and save a lot of time.

This antique plate is a wonderful display of the colors...I refer to it as the "Courtship"...it has delicate painted cameo vignettes depicting the stages of a romance....just so Romantic in every detail.

The Delicacy of Craftmanship

The details of this table legs are just the beginning of the true Artisan who created her...I say "her", because she looks as though she has been dressed up with jewelry.

Look closely at her front, she has inlay Coral cabochons and Turquoise over the hammered wrought iron front panel. The bottom also has wrought iron for the extra details under the cabinet...like a skirt of sorts. Don't know how old this table is, but it reminded us of the Spanish furniture photographed in our family albums.

Sometimes, I'm lucky enough to find a set of 4 or just pair...but when a certain piece like this cane seat, carved with grapevine is found alone...it's too precious to leave behind unloved and forgotten in the back of a store.

I hope to find another one day... but until then, I will show her off proudly.

These hand carved chairs are delicate and refined even for my eclectic home....but what they remind me of, is the artistic craftsmanship we are loosing today. I can imagine the well worn hands, cracked and callus from hours of carving and sanding. The hands that smoothed these fine chairs had so much history...that I feel it's my obligation to exhibit them in my humble abode....from one artist to another.

Lighting

This Clear Pink lamp base has wonderful air bubbles that caused me to grab it and bring it home. It reminded me of Murano glass. I know it's old but it has all the elements of Modern fixtures found in high-end stores today. Found the perfect beaded shade and now it's ready for it's debut.

These Vintage Hand Blown fixtures were commonly seen in Victorian Homes...but the colors and delicacy of these lamps had so much personality I had to make sure they were used somewhere in my home. When they are lit up they cast such a warm glow....that these little gems could be referred to as forefathers of modern design...think of todays Italian lighting.

These Vintage lamps have been collected thru the years...and as many other finds, something about these, just seemed perfect for my tastes and the home I was building. They weren't purchased at the same time nor did they come with the shades or sometimes the metal hangers..but when the time was right they found just the right spot or room.

The White Lamp sits on top the Faux painted Blue Marble wooden top I matched for the room with a small display of antique celluloid vanity pieces. Not sure of the shade yet...but I had to put it out...I loved the leaf pattern to much not to use it.

Furniture Re-Do

Close-up of ornate chairs covered in Antique Needlepoint...client was re-modeling home in a "French Gilded Inspired" theme....Blue-taped along the upholstered needlepoint, covered it in layers of saran wrap and prepared surface with clear primer....
Used both Ralph Lauren Ballroom Gold and highlighted finish with Stain & Seal from the Faux Effects line.

Used soft stencil brushes to rub on this step. I find using several layers of Gold ...give the chairs a richer finish.

Before...
White wooden chairs with decorative floral details and leather upholstery.
After...Client chose a Bronze metallic finish with Pewter & Black antiquing. The look made the chairs stand out against her metal tables. Used Lowes Specialty line which used to be McClosky by Valspar...look for square plastic bottles. Often a favorite choice for easy application.

Reality Shows

This is the only Picture I found for this posting..but if you're like me,I watch most competitive Design shows....this one is found on HGTV.

Most of us that share the passion for collecting and decorating, can get caught in this Reality Show net and this one, is no different.

If you watched the show last night, what did you think....did it help the cause of collecting & decorating?

I'm not one to turn her nose at Shabby Chic...but do you find this less appealing or popular with your buyers or your own choices when you decorate. Personally, I have evolved to incorporate a bit more. Not just the typical weathered doors or usual color palette shown last night. Maybe that's evident in some of my Blog Favorites and what they like to post.
I can't decide who I like yet....( I know I don't care for Tracee's attitude) but I like to think about what "I" would have done if I had enough guts to put my name into the hat of this competitive show.

Still, it's fun to watch and forget yourself for an hour or so.

Holiday Weekend

Well-loved hamper decorated with a collage of porcelain dolls, lace and antique jewelry.

These pictures were taken in an Antique store on Main Street, which had eclectic choices... from European to American collectibles....lot's of Religious artifacts, Garden decor and Lighting.

Over the weekend while visiting Fredreicksburg, Texas , I found this wonderful Alley Way on Main Street with some large wrought iron gates resting against the stone walls of the store buildings. Just imagine the majestic homes these once adorned?

Hutch

Fun Hutch with collection of Tea Cups and Roosters Adorning the top for Seasonal Decorating.

Opted for Blue Glass Pulls instead of wooden

pulls that came with cabinet.

One side has Trompe L'oiel Bird House with Crackle accents over Grapevine. With the other having Nest & Butterflies.

This matching Dining Hutch was purchased unfinshed (Raw Wood) and painted in the same fun "Bird & Nest" motif as the Dining table. I used several colors and applied Crackle finish in certain spots for interest, with aging glaze wash for making a complete Dining set.

Back In Time

Station is filled with antique Filling Station wares...it's like stepping back into time...kept looking for Gomer Pile to clean the window.

This quaint little town of "Waring, Texas"is just north of San Antonio on IH 10. Pop. 50? Just kidding. I don't really know though, but it's a frequent stop for picture takers and weekend Bikers. No real shopping, just a quiet place to stop, relax, eat and think about how our parents lived way back when.

Peachy pearlized purse with golden beading on lid. One of my favorites, get lots of compliments....
With Fashion dictating that a Purse is a fashion statement, I'm so happy to have found such wonderful examples of "Girly" designs popular in Doris Day movies...which I love and enjoy using for special events.
That I feel even better that I'm doing my part in the "Green" movement.
I'm re-using a perfect accessory, at a fraction of the cost compared to those famous Labels that now are being manufactured in China and not reflecting the lower cost of labor, and just the high cost of advertising...that's another topic entirely.

Simple but Dressy...you don't have to worry someone else will be using this purse at the same party.

Clear Starburst Design on Lid, perfect for any scarf to coordinate with your outfit.

Faux Tourtoise Bakelite Purse

Carved, fruit or animals are popular choices.
The Music box was unexpected find....one of my favorites.

Bakelite...If you're familiar with this Fashion & Living staple found around late 1930's and on, it's still just as popular, maybe more. This rich vibrant medium was not just used for Jewelry but even ordinary house goods. Such as Radio's, Boxes, Buttons and even purses were often created in rich colors ranging from Butterscotch to Candy Apple Red.
Smooth to the touch, artist would carve, add rhinestones or other metals into their creations.
Today, from celebrities to collectors, all enjoy adding to their ensemble for everyday use or Red Carpet affairs. When you wear or use such a unique piece, you definitely stand out and make your own statement.

Muse

I've noticed that most Bloggers enjoy sharing their affections about their family ...not just the two legged one's but those with whiskers or shedding coats.

Mine happens to be my artistic Muse, my oldest friend, Dryf as he affectionately is called...just by human ears....since he lost his hearing a few years ago, so now constantly keeps one eye open and nose smelling.

He just turned 18 years old....yep, that's 126 in human B-days and currently, the oldest dude at his Vet's office...That's my Boy!

He's my artistic companion, who checks in on me, while I ponder in my studio packing up my paint gear, working at my easel, or just thinks I have some treats hidden from him.

Now called ....affectionately, "The Faker" by friends and family.

Let me explain. Dryf gave me a pretty good scare last Fall....to the point that he was moments away from me making the horrific decision to put him down, when he had a traumatic "ear" infection, that caused seizure-like symptoms.

Miraculously, when he saw my friend walk into the exam room, he shook it off and tried diligently to stand up and he did. After a week of medication and return Vet visits he made it to another B-day.

Now, he is fine....to the point that he milks the opportunity to get friends, better known as "suckers", to give him extra treats and massage's when they visit.

He does have a bit of arthritis's, but who wouldn't, at 126 ...nevertheless, I think it gives him more personality... a John Wayne-like swagger, as he pulls himself up and walks around checking messages on the front lawn.

At his age, I'm glad I made it a point to capture his personality, whether real or just made up to what I think his personality would be....that of a Matador...but I know he would prefer to lay in his favorite dog bed waiting for the next Beggin Strip.

The first picture is a wonderful gift my Artist friend, Pat created just special for me....using a picture she took of of the "Matador"...Pat transferred it into a perfect coin purse, too perfect to use in my messy purse. So I proudly display it with my purse collectibles.

When it comes to collections...it can just take one item to start a new habit, no pun intended.

In this situation, Antique Mexican & Spanish Retablos have been a new conquest. Whether found with aged frames or not, the rich colors and textures bring interest to any area of the home. Even creating somewhat of an alter with the addition of Prayer candle stands, Rosary. I have found several German, Black Forrest crosses to add height to my family Spiritual alter.

Make an Enterance

I have always found the "unexpected" the most interesting when painting Murals whether on walls or in this case, ceilings.

Here are some examples of taking nature and bringing it into your home...with a painted sky. You don't need a large Foyer or added height to create the interest, just some patience.

Use any paint, I prefer acrylic eggshell finish house paint and you don't have to buy the most expensive brand either. Get a quart of blue and white. This will be combined with some clear glaze ( any label you like )to create depth in the clouds.

Don't feel that you have to start by painting the entire surface with the blue base color you choose...leave some areas alone to reveal the white ceiling color, this will give you sharper whites when you brush or sponge on the white paint for your clouds. Adding more glaze to your white, will give you transparency to your clouds as well.

So play with your paint palette on some poster board to get the feel and look of your clouds. Remember to keep a clean brush, to help feather out some of your edges for a softer effect.

My method for painting clouds is to use several brushes, feathering or stippling the strokes, to get the look I like. This method also gives me the chance to add other colors in my clouds for sunsets.

As you can see in my pictures...I also like to add some yellow or darker blues for more depth....and I also played with idea of adding oak branches like I found surrounding the front yard.

It just takes some practice, so give it a try, whether in your main entrance or laundry room, one client had me paint the attic access, more of a skylight look. So give it a try, it might just brighten your day.

Painted Table

With today's economy always on the media, the harsh strains on people's pocketbook, can be emotionally draining as well.

Take this time to bring color and creativity into your home and find that simple paint finishes or fun details, can change existing pieces or those tucked away in the garage or found in a yard sale.

Give yourself the opportunity to find some hidden talents or let your personality show thru....Romantic, Funky, or Playful, whatever you would like to bring into your home. Paint is inexpensive and never permanent.

So pick up a brush or books, look around and paint.

Here is an example of an old Dining Room Table...nothing really special...

not until I brought my Joy of Birds to the table top.

I also found the opportunity to try Trompe L'oiel....fool the eye. with painting feathers and butterflies with shadows. Giving the fun aspect of them floating just on top.

No need for a tablecloth now.
